Meet George

George enjoys excursions and is often to be found riding a bicycle and taking photographs in and around Melbourne. He still plays the clavichord occasionally.

Deakin Law School, Deakin University, Burwood, May 2022. Designed by global architecture firm Woods Bagot and completed in 2021, the Deakin Law School building is a real showstopper: three stacked, zinc-clad “volumes” next to a fluted concrete tower, with a more prosaic glass structure behind – “an orchestrated contrast of masses,” according to Woods Bagot’s Bruno Mendes.
‘So I Sew Stitches’ (Madeline Bishop, 2022), PHOTO 2022 International Festival of Photography, Old Treasury Building, East Melbourne, May 2022. In her series ‘So I Sew Stitches’ Madeline Bishop photographs people unknown to her but connected to her friends and family. In so doing she poses the questions: “To what extent does our mutual connection translate to a shared history?” and “Does this amount to a meaningful intimacy between us?” The series is part of Photo Australia’s second annual International Festival of Photography, whose theme this year is ‘Being Human’. The festival runs from 29 April to 22 May at locations across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Silver gulls, Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve, Williamstown, Nov 2020. Silver gulls in the late afternoon light at Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve in Williamstown, taken with the old camera. Not a remarkable photo, but I do like the light on the legs of the gull in the foreground.
Tiny ship, Surf Beach, Torquay, Apr 2022.
A’Beckett Tower, 19–37 A’Beckett St, Melbourne, May 2022. A’Beckett Tower was designed by Elenberg Fraser and completed in 2011. According to the architects, the striking northern façade, with its 347 louvres in 16 different colours inspired by Australia’s arid landscape, explores the sensory effects of colour.
Aurora Melbourne Central and RMIT University Building 80, Melbourne, May 2022. In the background is Aurora Melbourne Central, at 224–252 Latrobe St in Melbourne’s CBD, designed by Elenberg Fraser and completed in 2019. The organic structure is shaped like the leaves of the hibiscus flower, the national flower of Malaysia, to reflect its Malaysian developers and Melbourne’s position as a centre of cultural interaction. In the foreground is RMIT University’s Building 80, aka Swanston Academic Building (SAB), one of the university’s most iconic buildings, with a façade that somewhat resembles metallic, three-dimensional reptile scales. It was designed by Lyons Architects and completed in 2012. SAB was voted Best Public Building at the 2014 Property Council of Australia awards.
